Budapest International Airport (IATA: BUD) is the biggest of the nation's commercial airports, 16 kilometers southeast of the city of Budapest. It connects Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North America, and Asia.

Four passenger buildings make up the airport:

• Charter flights utilize Terminal 1.
• Terminal 2A handles Schengen planes.
• Terminal 2B handles non-Schengen flights.

History of Budapest Airport

Once known as Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, on March 25, 2011, it was formally renamed Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport in honor of the Hungarian musician and composer. Most people still refer to the airport by its old name Ferihegy.

Airport residents call their community Ferihegy. The name comes from the old estate owner, Ferenc Xavér Mayerffy (1776-1845), who planted vineyards and advanced the winemaking industry in Pest and Budapest. In the 1940s, when the airport was being built, a 147-meter-tall sandy mound was flattened.

The concept for a new airport in Budapest dates to 1938. The new airport was designated for land on the border between the municipalities of Pestszentlrinc, Rákoshegy, and Vecsés. The airport was designed to serve civilian, military, and sporting needs simultaneously.

The northwest was designated for civilian construction, while the southwest was meant for military use. The design and construction of the traffic building were put out to public bid in the same way that other facilities were.

Károly Dávid Jr.'s plans were selected after a tender was solicited in September of 1939, and the results were announced in December. Construction began in 1942. The architect had a vision for a structure that, from above, looked like an airplane. He is considered a pioneer of modern Hungarian architectural art.

Between 1940 and 1943, a 16-kilometer expressway was built as a means of access to the airport. It was updated and is still in use today.

From 1940, the construction of military structures ran in tandem with civilian buildings but at a much faster pace due to the war.

In 1943, the airport opened and began serving the aviation industry. Civil construction slowed to a halt during the war in the early months of 1944. Many airport structures were destroyed or badly damaged as World War II ended. The Soviet Union occupied Budapest's airport in 1944.

There were 16.2 million travelers through the airport in 2019. Two significant airlines call this airport home: Wizz Air and Ryanair, both of which have headquarters here. There was a dramatic decrease in flights through it in 2012.

Since Malév Hungarian Airlines went bankrupt earlier this year, it lost many connecting passengers and shifted its focus to freight handling. Before the airline's insolvency on February 3, 2012, it served as Malév's central hub.

Some airlines from the Americas and the Middle East started offering direct flights to Budapest in 2015. LOT Polish Airlines expanded internationally in 2018, making Budapest its first hub outside of Poland with year-round service to New York-JFK and Chicago-ORD.

American Airlines Budapest service returned this year. When American Airlines resumed service in 2012, flights from Philadelphia instead of New York-JFK were used because of the airport's history of delays.

Now serving more than 60 locations, Wizz Air's Budapest hub is the largest in the company.
